The Afghan Foreign Ministry said on Sunday that Russia Russia has officially approved the Taliban government’s nomination of an ambassador to Moscow, as economic and political ties between the two sanctions-affected countries continue to develop.
In April, Russia lifted its ban on the Taliban, which for more than two decades has been labeled a terrorist organization, in a move that paved the way for Moscow to normalize relations with the movement that leads Afghanistan.
No country has officially recognized the Taliban government, which took power in Afghanistan in 2021 after the withdrawal of US-led forces from the country.
“We hope that this new phase will allow the two countries to expand cooperation in various fields,” Amir Khan Mottaki, the Taliban government’s acting foreign minister, said in a statement.
In 2023, China became the first country to accept an ambassador-level diplomat from the Taliban, and several countries have since followed suit, including Pakistan, which announced an increase in the level of diplomatic representation with Afghanistan over the past week.
Officially presenting an ambassador’s credentials to a foreign head of state is a step toward recognition, diplomats say.
