Bruno Rautaillot is a prominent right-wing conservative French politician, born in 1960 in the northern city of Cholet. France. He held several positions, including member of the General Council of the Fundy region from 1988 to 2015, and was appointed Minister of the Interior in September 2024.
He also served as a member of the French Parliament representing his region between 1994 and 1997, and was appointed president of the Pays de la Loire regional council between 1998 and 2017.
Elected to the French Senate for the Fonds region from 2004 to 2024, he headed a faction within the “Republicans” in 2017.
Birth and upbringing
Bruno Rautaillot was born on November 20, 1960, in Cholet in the Maine-et-Loire department in northern France.
He grew up in the town of Saint-Malo-du-Bois in the Fonds region in a conservative Catholic family of six.
His father Michel Rautaillot was a grain merchant and served as mayor of Saint-Malo-du-Bois from 1965 to 1983, succeeding his grandfather Lucien Rautaillot, while his mother Annie Béguin was a housewife.
From a young age, he showed an interest in French history and national traditions. At the age of ten, he began learning to ride horses, and later developed a passion for breeding horses, especially Spanish horses.
Bruno Retaillot did his military service between 1982 and 1983 at the Saumur Armored Weapons School, starting as a cadet officer and then obtaining the rank of “Aspiran”, he married a female doctor and they had 3 children.
Education and training
He received his initial education at the Saint-Gabriel School in Saint-Laurent-sur-Sèvres, France. After completing high school, Rautaillot attended the University of Nantes and earned a master’s degree in economics.
He continued his postgraduate studies at the Institute of Political Studies in the capital Pariswhere he graduated in 1985.
Career and political career
Rutayo began his career in the media industry and served as deputy director of a radio station between 1984 and 1986, overseeing content management and broadcasting, before becoming general manager of the Siones.com school specializing in media and communication in 1987.
He entered local politics at the end of the 1980s as a general councillor for Fondi Province, a position he held until 2015, then became vice president of the provincial council from 2004 to 2010, and then president from 2010 to 2015.
At the national level, he was appointed director of the French Politburo and founder of the Movement for France Philippe de Villierswho believed in his abilities and was his first political mentor and supporter, and then became his successor after his resignation.
Between 1994 and 1997, he served as a deputy in the National Assembly (the French Parliament) representing the Fonds department, and as a regional councillor in the Pays de la Loire region from 1998 to 2004, returning to the post in 2015 and serving as president of the regional council of the region from 2015 to 2017.
In 2004, he was elected to the French Senate representing Fonds, a position he held for 20 years.
He was very active in several committees, notably the Committee on Economy and Sustainable Development and the Committee on Economic Affairs.
He also chaired the “Digital Dividend” committee from 2008 to 2013, which dealt with issues of advanced technology and digital transformation.
In 2012, Rautaillot joined the “Union for a Popular Movement“and then the Republican Party and rose through the ranks. He also served as National Secretary for Competitiveness and SME Support.
A year later, he became deputy director general in charge of the party’s political project. In 2014, he was elected head of the party’s group in the Senate and remained in this position until 2024, making him one of the most prominent voices of the conservative right in parliament.
Rotayo has paid particular attention to international and humanitarian issues. Since 2014, he has chaired the “Solidarity Group for Christians and Minorities in Middle East“and, between 2022 and 2024, chaired the International Information Group on Nagorno-Karabakh” and has been following developments in the South Caucasus.
In November 2017, he took over the presidency of the Force Républicain, a conservative political movement within the Republican Party, which was founded by François Fillon to defend the values of sovereignty and identity.
On September 21, 2024, Bruno Rautaillot was appointed Minister of the Interior in the French government, and because of this appointment he left the Senate after 20 years of political activity, to be replaced by Brigitte Ebert.
Political positions
Rautaillot espouses what he calls a “tough policy” on immigration, calling it “the biggest threat to French society.” He has also called for amending the constitution to hold a referendum on immigration, among his proposals:
- Abolishing the automatic right to nationality for children born in France to immigrant parents.
- Recriminalization of irregular residence in France.
- Extend the detention period for irregular migrants in France from 90 days to 210 days in certain cases.
