The UK government will impose sanctions on Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir for their right-wing views, the Times reported on Tuesday.
According to the report, the UK will be joined by Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and other countries.
UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy recently implied that the UK was preparing to impose sanctions over their comments, which he described as “monstrous”.
According to the report, under the sanctions, the two Israeli ministers will be barred from entering the UK, and financial institutions based in the UK will be prohibited from dealing with them.
Last month, he stated in Parliament: “We are now entering a dark new phase in this conflict. Netanyahu’s government is planning to drive Gazans from their homes into a corner of the strip to the south and permit them a fraction of the aid that they need.
He noted that Minister Smotrich “even spoke of Israeli forces cleansing Gaza, destroying what’s left of residents, Palestinians being relocated, he said, to third countries.”
Lammy added: “We must call this what it is. It is extremism. It is dangerous. It is repellent. It is monstrous and I condemn it in the strongest possible terms.”
Minister Ben-Gvir commented on the reported: “Boo to the white paper (referring to the British orders prohibiting Jewish immigration to the Land of Israel during the British Mandate), we survived Pharaoh, we will survive Keir Starmer as well. I will continue to work for the State of Israel and the people of Israel without fear!”
