Hundreds of Libyans took to the streets of the capital, Tripoli on the 27th of August after news broke that the Libyan Foreign minister held a meeting with her Israeli counterpart in Rome a week before. The next day, Libyan prime minister suspended the foreign minister in an effort to contain the growing furore. The meeting is considered contentious because Libya does not formally recognize Israel and is supportive of the Palestinian cause. Additionally, a 1957 Libyan law deemed it illegal to normalize relations with Israel. While the Libyan foreign minister has labelled the meeting as “unplanned and informal”, the Israeli version claims that it lasted two hours and was “approved at the highest levels in Libya”. Reportedly, the Libyan foreign minister has now fled to Turkey, fearing for her safety, after being referred for investigation by the Prime minister.
